Rape, one of the most heinous crimes committed in our society, is often left without explanation. In a recent study, 35% of men reported a non-zero likelihood that they would perform sex on a woman against her will if they knew nobody would ever find out. Other alarming research suggests that 1 out of 3 college women report being a victim of sexual assault or an attempt of sexual assault. Some evolutionary psychologists suggest that rape is an adaptation from the history of males who are unable to find a mate inorder to spread their genes traditionally. Evidence supporting this includes the commonality that rapist target young and reproductive women, who are also likely more vulnerable. I do not support this and think that it neglects the power component of rape. Rape, to me, seems to be a by-product of male's use of aggression to achieve goals. It is more about power and control than about the actual sexual act and evolutionarily speaking, rape is not adaptive. It would not be selected for since there is often brutal physical and emotional damage to the female, which would likely inhibit their ability to raise that child.
On the other hand, male aggression has been selected for to protect and provide as females mother. This also seems to contribute to patriarchy. Men are most powerful in almost all societies and this is likely because while women were busy having children, they needed men who would take charge, provide and protect. Dictators where likely selected for in the past. That does not mean that it has to stay that way. Nor does it mean that one sex is better than the other, but it is important to know the evolutionary background of these traits so that we can take steps to change them if they are dysfunctional in modern society. Especially rape, is swept under the rug in the States. We need to grit our teeth and discuss it even though it is poisoning so we can proact for solutions.
